Washington State Parks and Recreation oversees Washington State tourism, including River Recreation. The state
of WA makes rafting possible by providing parks and river access. A prime example of Washington State parks at it's
best is Riverside State Park in Spokane, WA.
Riverside State Park houses the famous Bowl and Pitcher, Washington's most interesting class III rapid in the
state, carved by time in the basalt rocks of a volcanic epoch of long ago.
Geographically, think of Washington as two different states. The wet state west of the Cascade Mountains and the
dry, arid state east of the Cascade Mountains. The Cascades create our weather and feed our rivers.
The Cascade mountain range, home to such iconic mountains as Mount Baker, Mount Rainier, and Mount St. Helens.
The Cascades act as a geological weather barrier; on the east side of the mountains, you'll experience hot, sunny
summers and cool dry winters. On the west side (or "wet" side) you get cooler, wetter summers and milder, wetter
winters.
